Many organisations still talk about cyber incidents as if they are primarily about firewalls, malware, and “hackers breaking in.” In modern digital businesses, a large proportion of losses come from something less dramatic and more predictable: workflows that make fraud easy.
Attackers do not always need to exploit technical vulnerabilities. They exploit customer journeys:
sign-up and onboarding
login and recovery
support escalation
permissions and role changes
payout changes and approval flows
trust cues and verification signals
If your UX optimises relentlessly for speed, you often reduce the number of checks and increase the number of irreversible actions. That creates what fraudsters want most: a fast path to irreversible outcomes.
This is why “secure by design” cannot sit only in engineering. It must sit inside product design, customer operations, and support policy.
A practical way to treat UX security is to model it as an attack surface with predictable abuse patterns. The highest-risk UX surfaces cluster into five zones:
This includes password reset, email/phone changes, device registration, and MFA resets. Recovery is meant to help legitimate users. Attackers use it to take over accounts.
Support is where rules bend. Fraudsters specialise in pushing exceptions: “urgent,” “I’m locked out,” “I’m travelling,” “my number changed,” “I have a screenshot.”
Payout destinations, bank accounts, withdrawal keys, admin role changes, security settings, API keys. These are high-value actions because they change control of money or data.
Approval fatigue, confusing prompts, one-click approvals, poorly explained requests, and weak review mechanisms are common exploitation points.
Badges, “verified” labels, customer reviews, seller ratings, and “trusted agent” cues can be manipulated if not governed and re-validated.
This threat model should be the starting point for security design reviews. If your team cannot map fraud pathways to these zones, you are not designing defensively.
Convenience is not inherently bad. The problem is convenience applied indiscriminately.
The right framing is friction budgeting:
friction is reduced for low-risk actions
friction is intentionally increased for high-risk actions
friction changes dynamically based on context and signals
If you do not budget friction, you end up with one of two failures:
too little friction where stakes are high, which drives fraud
too much friction everywhere, which drives user churn and workarounds
The goal is not maximum security. The goal is security that protects critical outcomes while preserving usability for legitimate users.
Recovery flows are commonly abused because they are built for empathy and speed. Attackers exploit:
weak identity proofing during resets
reusing the same channel for authentication and recovery
poor device-change governance
short-lived or poorly monitored recovery windows
Once recovery is compromised, the rest of the account is usually lost.
Support agents are often pressured to “help the customer quickly.” Fraudsters treat support as an alternative authentication system, using:
authority cues (job titles, executive impersonation)
urgency (missed payment, business loss, travel emergency)
document forgery (screenshots, letters, IDs)
repeated attempts across different agents (“agent shopping”)
If support can override security without strict controls, support becomes your weakest control point.
Convenience for high-risk actions is dangerous. Examples include:
changing payout account without step-up verification
disabling MFA easily
adding a new trusted device without robust checks
exporting data without extra controls
Attackers seek irreversible actions. Your UX should make them hard.
If every message sounds urgent, urgent messages lose meaning. If prompts are ambiguous, users click through. Attackers mimic platform language and exploit habituation.
Badges and verification cues can become a fraud tool if:
criteria are unclear
re-verification is absent
enforcement is inconsistent
users cannot distinguish official trust signals from fake ones
Trust signals without governance are high-value targets.
In many African markets, commerce is deeply social. WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook groups, and informal communities drive trade and reputation. That changes the attacker playbook.
Common characteristics include:
impersonation via voice notes and local language cues
fake transfer alerts and receipts
community “trusted intermediaries” being weaponised
high reliance on screenshots as “proof”
mixed formal and informal dispute resolution norms
stronger pressure on support teams to “solve quickly” because users are cash-flow sensitive
A UX security strategy designed only for email-first Western patterns will miss the dominant fraud propagation channels in African markets.
Subject matter experts will expect concrete control patterns. Here are the ones that consistently reduce loss.
Any action that changes ownership of funds or account control should require step-up verification. Examples:
payout destination changes
MFA reset
device enrolment
admin role changes
high-value transfers or exports
Step-up can be:
stronger authentication methods
in-app verification plus out-of-band confirmation
time-based delays for sensitive changes
Introduce a delay for high-risk changes (payout change, key rotation, recovery). Notify the user immediately. This creates time for detection and reversal.
Avoid using the same channel for recovery and confirmation. If the attacker has compromised email, confirming through email is meaningless.
Support should not have unilateral power to override high-risk controls. Use:
supervisor approval
dual sign-off
recorded justification
event logging and post-review
Users should be able to see:
logged-in devices
recent security changes
payout changes
recovery attempts
session history
This supports early detection and self-remediation.
Standardise how official warnings look and what official staff will never ask for. Reduce ambiguity so impersonation becomes harder.
Not all users need identical friction. Apply stronger controls to:
high-value accounts
accounts with unusual behaviour
new devices and new locations
accounts linked to suspicious patterns
Secure UX fails when treated as “best practice” instead of an operating function. An operational model should include:
a recurring fraud pathway review (monthly or quarterly)
support exception audits (review override cases and outcomes)
design review checkpoints for new features affecting money, identity, and recovery
incident post-mortems that include product and support, not only engineering
fraud telemetry dashboards shared across teams
Fraud is adaptive. Controls must evolve.

These metrics keep the work grounded. If you do not measure pathways, you cannot improve them.
Convenience-first design often creates attacker-first outcomes. The solution is not to make products painful. It is to treat UX as part of the threat model and design with friction budgeting, strong recovery controls, governed support exceptions, and measurable risk reduction.
In markets where social engineering spreads fast and trust is hard-won, secure UX is not a “nice to have.” It is a competitive advantage.
